Every Business Needs a Contract Lawyer – #FocusFriday on #ThatBusinessShow – Featuring Juliann Nichols, Lisa Wilcox, Madison Miller, and Dr. Ron Eccles

Every Business Needs a Contract Lawyer – #FocusFriday on #ThatBusinessShow – Featuring Juliann Nichols, Lisa Wilcox, Madison Miller, and Dr. Ron Eccles

Happy Friday and welcome to another #FocusFriday on #ThatBusinessShow where we work to help you #Focus on key areas within your business.  This week’s focus was on the importance of involving an attorney in your contracts with guest Lisa Wilcox.  She is the founder of Wilcox Law and an expert in contract law and international law too and her focus is on helping consumers for the last eight years through bad debt collections, foreclosure defense and faulty robo-dialing issues.  She also incorporates advising businesses on how to prevent them from getting into consumer debt issues.  “Every business needs a contract lawyer” states Lisa who advises that as a business you are not a consumer, you are a business and have less protection under the law.  A great tip in the #MorningDiscussion is to ensure your contracts have a provision to avoid a Telephone Consumer Protection Act Lawsuit which deals with robo-dialing issues centered on advertising or collections.  We hear about a recent lawsuit that affected Papa Johns in this area and it was the fault of their advertising agency too.  For businesses that are large, be sure you are familiar with skip tracing and are accurately dialing numbers so as to not end up on the line with a person to whom the debtors number was transferred also.  Lisa reminds us too that just because you are a new entity or a small company, that does not mean you cannot negotiate better terms in your contract and shares with us some examples of David vs Goliath in this segment.  A large portion of the discussion centered on upcoming changes to labor laws and we began with a discussion on what is a 1099 contractor’s definition and what is a w-2 employees definition.  The IRS estimates that 80% of workers classified as independent contractors are actually employees and the IRS has launched a massive new “misclassification initiative” that will target small business owners so it is imperative you have your agreements outlined in contracts and reviewed by an attorney such as Lisa to ensure compliance and avoid fines!!  As part of this crackdown, the Department of Labor has hired 100 new auditors solely to investigate misclassifications and state investigators are turning up the heat on employers too.  In closing, we touched on the question of the week which is up in the Facebook group, Focus Friday and asks – Does your business have a will?  Get involved in the discussion here https://www.facebook.com/groups/FocusFridays/ and reach out to Lisa at 888-945-2695 or online at http://www.wilcoxlawpa.com!  And a reminder Each Friday at 7am, we speak with Juliann Nichols, CEO of Focus on You Strategy and another guest about their challenges, successes and failures and how working with Juliann and utilizing her strategies helped get them over the humps in their business.  Check out www.focusonyoustrategy.com and take advantage of one of her many CEO Exchanges to get a preview of how she can help Bring Out the CEO in You!  The next CEO Exchange is being held October 4th from 11am to 1pm at the C1 Bank in Hyde Park and you can register by clicking here!

Our 8am guest was Madison Miller, Cancer survivor and Founder of Spark the Way, a 501c3 that works to bring financial resources, and support to young victims battling Cancer.  Madison was diagnosed with cancer when she was 20 years old and that same month, cancer also  took  her grandfather’s life.  Not too soon after that her Grandmother was diagnosed with Cancer and still fighting to this day. In 2013, she was questioning God as to why she was afflicted so young and found solace in the Bible and his trustworthiness and her faith gave her the powerful ability not to fear cancer. She launched Spark the Way 2015 became an official 501(c)(3)!! In time, she hopes to accomplish a legacy that is about the people who Spark the Way impacts – the first generation of light-bearing, fearless fighters. Not in shining our own light, but in reflecting God’s. John 1:1-5.  She is hosting her Ignite the Light Gala on November 5th from 6pm to 9pm to raise funds and grants and awareness for young adult cancer and you can register online at www.sparktheway.org/events Missed this inspirational story?  Find it online here and learn more about Spark the Way at www.sparktheway.org!

Our next guest was Dr. Ron Eccles, Speaker, Coach and Business Trainer.  Dr. Ron is an accomplished entrepreneur having worked in many industries including Chiropractic, Real Estate Investments and Sales and was in studio today to talk about the 3 Principles in Business.  These were noted as do not limit yourself by your own personal health – meaning the stronger your personal health, the stronger your business will.  Second was a discussion on the Law of Sowing and Reaping and lastly a discussion of Spending vs. Investing.  Check out this discussion here and take advantage of Ron’s offer for serious entrepreneurs only – a free consultation by calling him at 484-515-4040 and learn more at www.conquermyeverest.com!

Our next segment featured Jim Yeager, Owner of Yeager and Company, alongside Charlie the Plumber.  Both have been Regular Contributors to the program since the show’s inception in February 2015 and Charlie is always a live wire in studio.  Opening up the segment with his thoughts on the recent Presidential debate, Charlie shares with the audience his disdain for Hillary Clinton and his strong commitment to traditional conservative values.  After Charlie settles in place, Jim talks about some resources available to Veterans through the University of South Florida and also his involvement in groups that assists Veterans returning to the workforce.  Jim and Charlie both are Marines and actively support and promote Veterans returning to the workforce.  Charlie is also a former professional wrestler and touches on a few wrestling memories during the final segment.  A third generation flooring and remodeling company based in Odessa, Florida – Yeager and Company is your resource for all things construction!  They have an amazing showroom located at 2310 Success Dr in Odessa and can be found online at www.yeagerflooring.com!

Our 8am segment saw the return of Jessica Rivelli to #WorkingWomenWednesay with a recap of the Working Women State Conference which saw around 300 in attendance and also gave 3 professionals seed money for their companies.  One of which was featured on the program in the second half of the show.  Our next guests were Cindi Crisci and Jennifer Howe with the American Cancer Society to discuss the upcoming Breast Cancer Awareness walks as October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk began in 1993 and has become the largest and most powerful network of breast cancer events in the nation.  In its first year, the program rallied 5,000 walkers in two cities to raise $660,000. To date, Making Strides events have raised $594 million for breast cancer programs.  In 2015 alone, more than one million walkers across the country raised more than $60 million to help us save more lives from breast cancer.  There are nearly 300 Making Strides events in the U.S.  This year, the majority of the Making Strides walks will occur in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. These events help the American Cancer Society invest in groundbreaking breast cancer research, help women diagnosed with breast cancer, and ensure access to screenings and treatment for women who need them.  Walks are scheduled for October 15th at Vinoy Park in Pinellas County at 9am and on October 22nd at the Amalie Arena in Hillsborough at 9am and The Shops at Wiregrass in Pasco at 8:30am on October 22nd.  Register and learn more via the links provided and more on the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org!

In our closing segment, we welcomed one of the recipients of the seed money at the Working Women Conference, Sarina Correa.  She is the Founder of Pixie Dust Paint Company, an all-natural and eco-friendly paint additive and wax that creates amazing finishes and gives life to old furniture and fixtures. Sarina loves inspiring people to “Restore, Reuse, & Recycle” their home furnishings instead of tossing them to the curb. Pixie Dust is manufactured in Ruskin, Florida and distributed to shops all over the US. Sarina has had a passion for painting and restoring furniture for over 30 years and loves having a creative outlet outside of her personal finance career. She was inspired by painting at a young age and shares the story of how her father, a woodworker, did not like her painting wood products, saying that wood needed a natural look.  Painting was her passion though and she developed that into a product line with Pixie Dust.  The finish after application gives the product a rustic, aged look that is unique and attractive.  Since 2014, she alongside her mother, have continued to grow the business and now have a production facility in Ruskin and are found in several boutique storefronts.  The product is usable on wood, metal, and cabinetry work too.  She hopes to get the product in front of a major paint distributor in the future too.  Check out their product line and some images of painted products at www.pixiedustpaintcompany.com!

Our opening guest today was Dianne Allen, Founder of Visions Applied.  While many think that her company refers to optics in some way, it does not and is a mentorship and assistance program she offers to people to help them find their happiness in life.  You may think of it as life coaching, but Dianne says her program is unique, offering focused solutions for action that yield powerful results for each participant in an uplifting, action oriented and safe environment.  Working towards the values of creativity, open mindedness, action, authenticity and education, Dianne has helped thousands find their paths in life over 30 years in business.  Her powerful corporate presentations are part of her many years of mentoring gifted adults in the workplace and the family. She has been featured on CBS and CNN as well as the Discovery Channel. She is the author of two books: How to Quit Anything in 5 Simple Steps and The Loneliness Cure: A Guide to Contentment.  Jamie and Dianne discussed The Loneliness Cure on the segment too and Dianne identifies that many people are lonely despite being in loving households and accomplished careers.  More and more she is seeing loneliness come to those younger and they share a discussion on the effects of technology on this.  “It’s about finding the thing in life that fills the void you are filling” states Dianne.  Whether personal, spiritual or professional, many of us have a void we are trying to fill and oftentimes do not understand what that void is.  That is where Dianne comes in.  She is an effective listener and she and Jamie share a great discussion on how this skill is often under-utilized and poorly understood, that is one of her keys to success.  She also touches on the 5 simple steps to quit anything in the closing moments too, the subject of her other book.  Both books can be found in traditional book stores such as Barnes and Nobles and available online here  If you are filling void in your life and need guidance, reach out to Dianne today at 727-744-5852 and learn more at www.visionsapplied.com.

In the 7:30 spot, we welcomed returning guest Wendy Long to the program.  Wendy took a turn out of corporate Human Resources work over a year ago to open the La Dee Da Kids Spa located at 2250 State Road 580 in Dunedin.  Wendy sought out the concept of bringing a child’s imagination to reality while capturing those memories through photographic images. With a passion for photography and art, a fun-loving spirit and having two toddlers of her own, she combined her experiences and came up with LaDee-Da Kids Spa!  The spa offers traditional services geared towards children including haircuts, manicures and pedicures and they offer off-site services too for children’s parties including bringing characters to life to fascinate the children?  Offering a variety of packages including mommy-daughter days, her facility has services for both children and adults.  She also has event room space on site and has held many children parties at the business.  Consider them for your next event or for a relaxing day with the children.  She can be reached at 727-301-1808 or online at www.ladeedakidsspa.com!

In the closing segment of the 7am hour, we featured our #What’sTrending segment featuring social media expert Matt Ashwood.  A recent implant into the Presidential race through social media channels, Matt joined us in studio to discuss that decision.  In fun, Matt decided to add levity to the 1st Presidential debate last night by posting his photo in Presidential pose with the caption Ashwood 2016 to take away from the negativity on the social media feeds over the debates.  Josh shares with us his efforts to locate a T-Rex too last night at the mall, of which he documented on Facebook at the same time as the debate, thus adding his influence to the heated debates online.  Matt fills us in that the multiple posts by Josh on Facebook would have been much better served up as an Instagram story, a good takeaway from this segment.  Matt also talks about the direction Twitter is taking and how they are likely to sell soon in the future.  Check Matt out online at www.mattashwood.me!

Our 8am guest was Steve Cohn.  Steve is a licensed agent with US Health Advisors here in Tampa where he specializes in lower-premium, $0 deductible health plans for individuals, families and small groups.  He explains that many people are frustrated with their health insurance plans with their high monthly premiums and high deductibles and how that the ACA (ObamaCare) plans have already announced huge increases for 2017 (20% – 40% and more) and that many plans no longer available.

The alternative is US Health Group with their lower premium, $0 deductible and $0 co-pay major medical-type health plans for relatively healthy people.  According to Steve, most save $2,000 – $3,000 per year.  US Health Group won “Insurance Company of the Year” from the American Business Awards this year for its innovative plans that combat the frustration of the ACA Marketplace plans.  You do not have to wait for Open Enrollment either to take advantage of their plans.  Steve invites you to contact him via phone for more information and to apply – find him at 813-777-2506 or online at www.ushagent.com/stevencohn!

Our last guest on the #MorningDiscussion was returning guest and TBBO member Debra Palmer.  Debra Palmer has been a business services entrepreneur in the Tampa Bay Area since 1988 and in 2013, she was introduced to the concept of third party inventories and spent extensive time researching the industry. Through exhaustive research and direct communications with individuals who had experienced losses and endured the claims process of their insurance companies without up to date documentation to substantiate equitable settlements, Debra realized the need for inventory professionals in the Tampa Bay Area.  Today she is a Certified Inventory Specialist and Founder of Palmer Home and Business Inventory Professionals.  Debra shares with us how for as low as $399, you can begin to document the items in your home and have them stored in a cloud for easy documentation in the event of a disaster.  “It’s not enough just to videotape your home” she says.  In the event of an insurance claim, you need to have photographs of individual items with receipts to get reimbursed.  She shares with us a story of someone impacted by a disaster and the difficulties she had in getting reimbursed due to the lack of documentation to provide to the insurance company.  Debra solves this and once set up, you can begin to manage the portal of your documents online or continue to use her services to manage it for you.  Taking great care to ensure your privacy, this is a great service that is oftentimes never even known to exist until it is too late.  Get in touch with her at 813-308-9727 and learn more at www.phbinventorypros.com!

Opening up the program today was returning guest Sheryl Nicholson.  As a top rated speaker and author, Sheryl Nicholson, has earned her Certified Speaking Professional designation that is given to the top 5% in the industry. Clients include The CIA, Government agencies, and emerging businesses and she is considered a people productivity expert who develops people skills – often mistakenly called “soft skills” that she called instead POWER SKILLS. She was in studio today to talk about how to improve your speaking and presentation skills starting with a discussion on how she caters her talks to her client’s needs.  Many speakers have a few keynote speeches ready to use but she does not take that direction, again customizing her speeches to meet the audience she is talking to.  She shares with us a number of techniques to ease yourself on stage including “hooking” whereby you cross your arms, hook your fingers under your elbows, breathe and imagine a scene that makes you happy and thus “hook” yourself to that location.  This will relax and ease you into your speaking presentation.  She also discussed how to anchor yourself to a position on stage and avoid crossing the stage during your presentation.  Some speakers are known for their on stage movements but unless you are moving throughout a crowd, the effect is often to minimize your impact.  Regarding questions, she recommends the speaker to have the audience text in questions throughout the discussion and then you can pick and choose what questions to incorporate into your discussion too.  With over 30 years of speaking experience, Sheryl can be contacted for your next speaking engagement.  Get in touch with her at 727-678-6707 or femalespeaker@gmail.com and learn more at www.sheryl.com!

At 7:30, we welcomed Susan Garrett, Program Director from the St. Petersburg College Workforce Institute.  The SPC’s Workforce Institute is the non-degree seeking department of the college and focuses on professional training and certifications.  They offer training in 85 industry recognized certifications in high-demand business sectors such as Information and Innovative Technologies, Manufacturing, Business and Finance, Health Care, Supply Chain, and Public Safety.  The department works with new students first on an assessment to help them identify a career path for those unsure.  Once enrolled, students can take advantage of a variety of benefits including Job Preparation and Placement, Resume Assistance, Interview Preparation, LinkedIn profile development, Job Search Strategies and more.  Available funding sources for students that were discussed were WIOA, Youth Connect, and the Pinellas Opportunity Council.  The department also offers corporate training for companies who want to train groups of employees.  This is customizable and available at SPC or at the company.   SPC is also part of the Global Corporate College, a network of 50 colleges and universities across the United States committed to delivering consistent high-quality training.  Think of it as a one-stop training solution for companies with multiple locations.  The college also has collaborative labs which function as your business team’s idea incubator, creative studio, business laboratory and planning factory.  You can map hundreds of activities and then see the whole plan at once.  It is web-based and real-time records capture team solutions and deliverables.  A team of facilitators is available to employ a systematic approach to orienting your team to the situation — exploring new options, studying relevant trends and data, building models for addressing the challenge, testing these models, and facilitating the implementation for the most robust ideas.  Other benefits include a cartoonist (yes a cartoonist),  Interactive smart boards, video conferencing, LCD projectors/screens, plasma display, Wi-Fi, internet phone, color printers, music system, RF voting devices, digital video recorders, digital cameras, and groupware.  The Workforce Institute is holding a Healthcare Professions Expo on October 7th from 11am to 3pm including information on phlebotomy tech courses, CAN to CMA Bridge Program and Clinical Medical Assistant Program to name a few of the offerings to review that day.  Learn more at www.spcollege.edu/workforce or call 727-341-4761.

At 8am, we welcomed the duo of Marc Poling, Owner of Mango Cleaners and long-time friend and business partner Ashley Butler who owns an Ice Cold Air Franchise on Dale Mabry and is now working with Marc on their new Wash Club.  Originally from West Virginia, Marc became a budding entrepreneur in elementary school with his first start-ups, a neighborhood lemonade stand and candy bar business.  Throughout high school, Marc worked various part-time jobs, while continuing to develop his entrepreneurial skills, along with his talents as an up-in-coming musician.  During college, Marc’s business savvy and networking skills were instrumental in forming St. Petersburg’s “wildest rock-n-roll band”, Mark and the Marksmen.  Marc’s roles as lead singer, guitarist and band promoter, secured the band’s contracts performing at venues throughout the Southwest Florida region until Marc relocated to Louisiana.  Marc earned a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration from Louisiana State University (LSU), and soon after college joined the United States Navy.  Upon his completion of service, Marc became an auditor for the Veterans Administration in Florida, where he led a veterans’ employment program to the #1 spot in the country for success in matching veterans to jobs.  Shortly after his success with the VA, Marc realized he was happiest living his passion as an entrepreneur and became the owner of Poling Place Bookstore and Bookstore Fixtures of America.  After his stint in the bookselling industry, Marc pursued a career as a Commercial Real Estate Broker and Developer, while also becoming the owner of Spring Hill Mini Golf.  Marc has also served as a Senior Executive for Excel Telecommunication’s Europe division, which allowed him to reside and travel internationally for part of his career.  Marc got his start in the dry cleaning industry as a dry cleaning business broker, which led him to purchasing his own dry cleaning business, Mango Cleaners and Laundry.  As a successful business owner, Marc dedicates himself to operating Mango’s three locations, which serve the greater Tampa Bay area and Pinellas County.  Today, his business is opening up the Wash Club which is On Demand laundry services at a low monthly cost instead of traditional services which are by the pound.  Simply visit www.mangocleaners.com and get started today!

#FocusFriday Focusing on The Power of Storytelling Featuring Juliann Nichols, Fran Powers, Bruce Wawrzyniak and Nico Hohman!

#FocusFriday Focusing on The Power of Storytelling Featuring Juliann Nichols, Fran Powers, Bruce Wawrzyniak and Nico Hohman!

Happy Friday and on #ThatBusinessShow, Friday is not a day to relax but a day to focus which our weekly #FocusFriday feature.  Each Friday at 7am, we speak with Juliann Nichols, CEO of Focus on You Strategy and another guest about their challenges, successes and failures and how working with Juliann and utilizing her strategies helped get them over the humps in their business.

On this edition of #FocusFriday, we were joined in studio by Fran Powers, Founder of Powerstories Theater.  Located at 2105 W Kennedy Blvd, this theater has been in business for over 15 years now.  Fran shares with us how she was feeling stuck in life and a bike ride from Seattle to D.C. inspired her to launch her business and it was the power of storytelling which was the focus of the program today.  Believing that all entrepreneurs have a story behind their brand, Juliann works to bring that story out of the leaders she works with and Fran highlights the power of stories in her theatrical productions at Powerstories.  Focus on the “why”, not the facts and figures is a key takeaway from this segment.  Consumers are moved to buy when you inspire them emotionally, and oftentimes, you why will help connect you to their motivations too because we are all connected in similar ways and capacities.  Stories also help consumers engage and connect with the service provider and the stories work to validate user experiences too.  Powerstories central mission is to inspire and guide young women in their teenage years to find their purpose and story in life to keep them focused on a happy and fulfilling life filled with success and in 2010, Powerstories Theatre won The National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award which is the highest award in the nation presented by the Federal Government. It was presented to Fran at the White House by First Lady Michelle Obama.  In 2011 Powerstories won the WEDU award for Artistic Excellence and in 2013, Fran was honored as a Community Hero by the Tampa Bay Lightning.  All productions have sponsorship opportunities too and volunteers are always welcome.  Their next production is called “Vote?” and will run from October 20th to November 6th and is about an 18 year old woman who is registered to vote but has no intention of casting a ballot.  The play works to inspire our younger generation to get involved in our political system and does this by invoking a series of past historical events and showing their importance to all who came thereafter.  Tickets for the event are $20 and can be purchased online at www.powerstories.com and please help us continue the conversation at the Facebook group Focus Fridays where a poll is up asking you about your propensity to vote, are you apathetic about voting?  Let us know online here!

At 8am, we welcomed Bruce Wawrzyniak who is the Founder and President of Now Hear This.  With a focus on management, promotion, and booking, Now Hear This can help any kind of artist soar and get noticed!  The company even has non-music clients, such as authors and an Olympic athlete.  Also, Now Hear This Entertainment is a weekly podcast hosted by Bruce.  The show has been delivered on-time, every week, for two-and-a-half years and has gotten listeners from 121 countries around the world.  It has spawned an eBook series called, “Bruce’s Bonus Book,” with Volume 3 being released this week.  Bruce is also a speaker, having presented at a Young Songwriters Workshop in Nashville, a Content Marketing Summit here in Tampa, and getting ready to do workshops at songwriters festivals in the Florida panhandle in early October and then in Alabama in early November.  Bruce talks with Jamie about how he is more than just a booking agent for talent and works with many of his entertainers on developing their brand / story, a key component once again on this episode.  Bruce also shares with listeners how many entertainers struggle to get noticed because even when booked at a venue, many venues require the entertainers to play cover songs and original works are discouraged.  Venues like YouTube are becoming the new breeding ground for finding new talent too but with a saturated market, it boils down still to “who you know” per Bruce.  Bruce also represents businesses and brands in addition to entertainers and he invites you to give him a call at 813-854-8000 and visit www.nowhearthis.biz!

At 830, we welcomed Nico Hohman, Real Estate agent and soon to be Broker-Owner specializing in the sale of new construction homes.  Nico has a construction background and is actively involved in bettering the standards of the real estate industry and the greater Tampa Bay community by serving on committees and boards within the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors, Florida Realtors, Toastmasters International, Emerge Tampa Bay, Nativity Catholic School, the University of Florida School of Construction Management, and the All Children’s Hospital Guild.  He is a contributing author to REALTOR Magazine and to Inman News, an innovative news source for the real estate industry. He is also an adjunct professor of real estate at Hillsborough Community College and serves as the Head Golf Coach at Jesuit High School in Tampa, which has won 10 consecutive district titles.  Nico and Jamie share some good insight on how a Realtor can help you as a buyer when purchasing a new home and why to avoid just walking into a sales office un-represented in a new home community.  Learn more about Nico at www.hohmanhomes.com or give him a call today for new home sales assistance at 813-638-4971!

Thanks for listening to #ThatBusinessShow where we work to bring you positive programming each morning on 1250WHNZ about Tampa Bay’s entrepreneurs and community leaders.  Please help support the show, ways to do this are memberships in Tampa Bay Business Owners – apply at www.tbbo.org/join-us , and you can also support the show by picking up a ticket to our Business Symposium on October 28th, tickets available at www.tbbo.org/symposium  Thank you to all of our listeners, viewers, as well as readers and staff that make the show possible each morning.
