How to Catch a Shark – A #TBBO Discussion! #ThatBusinessShow Featuring Brian Kornfeld, Karen Mertes, and Tara Richter

Welcome to another episode of #ThatBusinessShow where we work to bring you positive programming each morning on 1250WHNZ about Tampa Bay’s entrepreneurs and community leaders.  Please help support the show, ways to do this are memberships in Tampa Bay Business Owners – apply at , and you can also support the show by picking up a ticket to our Business Symposium on October 28th, tickets available at  Thank you to all of our listeners, viewers, as well as readers and staff that make the show possible each morning.

Opening up the program today was Regular Contributor Brian Kornfeld, Owner of PopKorn Apps.  Brian saw an opportunity in app design to shave tens of thousands of dollars off of the cost of app development and took the entrepreneurial dive with PopKorn Apps.  Brian has produced many apps and can get that idea to the marketplace for you.  Brian also comes from a background in Aerospace Engineering and we open the discussion with a brief chat on the recent SpaceX rocket explosion and how he worked in that line of work, putting satellites in orbit.   He spends the hour with us and shares with us how an idea for a ride sharing app (before the days of Uber & Lyft) turned into PopKorn Apps.  Beginning with his first idea for an app, he tried to outsource it and was amazed at the incredible costs associated with the app production and worked to find a solution.  That app was RhiKnow and he successfully built and launched that app on his own.  The RhiKnow app, which is available on iOS and Android operating systems worked as a social network but with the ability to look for feedback and recommendations on different outings from people within your own sphere of influence.  The idea was to get feedback from people you knew and trusted versus online networks that have feedback from many unknown sources.  Brian advises if you have that idea, don’t wait.  Get in touch with him today for a free discussion over a cup of coffee.  Find him online at or phone at 727-415-6705.

At 8am we welcomed the duo of Karen Mertes and Tara Richter to the #MorningDiscussion.  Karen Mertes, a Lt Col (Ret) from our United States Air Force turned a life altering tragedy into a life purpose with her entrepreneurial organization, Fulfill Your Destiny.  Today, Karen is a sought-after Professional Speaker, #1 Amazon Best Selling Author of Plaintiff 101, and a Certified Entrepreneur, Leadership and Business Consultant all to benefit Fulfill Your Destiny.  She is also a returning guest and was recognized earlier this year by Jamie Meloni as having one of the Most Inspirational Entrepreneurial Stories of 2015.  Tara Richter joined her in studio and is the Publisher behind the book, Plaintiff 101.  Sheis the President of Richter Publishing and specializes in helping business owners write their non-fiction story in 4 weeks & publish a book in order to become an expert in their industry. She has been featured on CNN, ABC, Daytime TV, FOX, SSN, Channel 10 News, USA TODAY, Beverly Hills Times and radio stations all over the world!  Her degree is in Graphic Design and she worked in the copy and print industry in the Silicon Valley and has written and published 10 of her own books in just a few short years. Tara now has published many other authors in her local Tampa bay area including Anthony Amos & celebrity entrepreneur, Kevin Harrington, Shark from ABC’s “Shark Tank” with their joint book, “How to Catch a Shark.”  Karen shares with us her tragic story of being hit by a drunk driver and how that turned into Fulfill Your Destiny and the book Plaintiff 101 which is now an Amazon #1 Best Seller.  The non-profit organization works to help others affected by sudden tragic accidents and has also launched her into the business of speaking and presenting.  She also shares with us how the effects of the accident led to her honorable discharge from the USAF and into the world of non-profits.  Tara, who shares with us a similar story of being hit by a drunk driver, became inspired to get involved with the book launch because of that and also talks about some of the basics of book publishing, launching and promotions.  Find the book online at and for all business owners out there, get a book published, it makes a huge difference in business and your credibility – visit www.richterpublishing for more information on Tara’s publishing services and have your book out in as little as 4 weeks!

Tickets on sale now for the Business Symposium – pick them up at and take advantage of getting your brand in front of over 400 people by becoming an event sponsor, opportunities for that can be found here Tickets are $39 for TBBO members and $59 for non-members and includes lunch.  Event is held October 28th from 9am to 3pm at the Hilton Hotel in St. Petersburg on Lake Carillon Drive.

Opening up the show today was Daniel Leeds, Owner of Full House Babyproofing, a professional childproofing company based in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Full House Babyproofing LLC was founded after Daniel encountered many challenges in creating a safe place in his home for their son-especially after he began crawling. He realized many parents, in particular new parents, must go through the same frustrations, and that the Tampa Bay area would benefit from a qualified authority in home child safety. – Daniel shares with our audience some of the areas of concern and how to baby-proof them including how to handle electrical outlets.  Gone are the days of the covers that plug in he says.  Today’s standards are to use a cover that retracts and snaps / locks back into place.  Daniels talks about baby gates and solutions for homes with pools as well as the different types of cabinet securing devices to prevent children from getting into household chemicals.  A large, often unforeseen problem, are tip over hazards and Daniel discusses how he works to alleviate this issue inside homes as well.  Daniel recommends you baby-proof your home at the latest by the time the child is 6 months old and on the move but the earlier the better.  He can get your home ready in a day in many cases and you can get in touch with him by calling at 813-693-2270 or online at

At 7:30, we were joined by Expert Contributor Dr. Chris Pittman, Medical Director and CEO of Vein911. Dr. Pittman is triple board certified and one of only a few hundred physicians Board-Certified in Venous and Lymphatic Medicine.  Known for their minimally invasive non-surgical technique for the treatment of varicose veins, Dr. Pittman and Vein 911 is revolutionizing vein care.  Their mission is to help you look and feel your best and they have offices in Tampa and St. Petersburg and can easily be reached by calling 855-VEIN-911. Dr. Pittman is a trained radiologist and spoke in the opening segment about varicose veins and their pain free outpatient procedure for their treatment.  Many doctors practicing vein treatment still utilize a surgical procedure for this treatment and Dr. Pittman is adamant that is no longer necessary.  His techniques using Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy can have your legs looking as good as new in just a few procedures and without the pain of other procedures.  He routinely sees patients treated by other procedures and has near 100% patient satisfaction in this group.  Dr. Pittman also elaborates on some of the other conditions of the legs that may be related to undiagnosed vein disorders such as restless leg syndrome and night cramps as well as ankle swelling.  Using the same technique to treat varicose veins, many patients report significant improvement in these conditions when treated by Dr. Pittman.  If you are experiencing these issues and have not had success with traditional techniques, get in touch with Vein911 today by calling 855-VEIN-911 (855-834-6911).

AT 8am, we launched #WorkingWomenWednesday.  Jessica Rivelli, coming off a successful Working Women Conference, was vacationing and we spoke with Kate Campbell, Committee Advisor with Tampa Bay Fashion Week.  Kate Campbell is a marketing/retail consultant, and committee advisor and longtime supporter of Tampa Bay Fashion Week. She most recently served as the Fashion Director at the Art Institute of Tampa where she brought her expertise as a fashion buyer and retail manager to the curriculum. Her retail career involves a variety of retail operations, including: specialty apparel, accessories, and home goods. Her interests range from entrepreneurship to fashion, and she is also interested in education, enjoying and promoting the Tampa Bay area, and current events as they impact the consumer.  Fashion week kicks off in Tampa Bay with a few different event dates and locations on September 21st and runs through September 24, learn more at!

Our next guest on the program was Marilin Larken.  Marilin is a portrait photographer located in Apollo Beach and has over 20 years of art and design experience including drawing, painting, graphic and web design. When her daughter was a baby, her husband gifted her the first professional camera and she fell in love with photography. Since then, this medium has given me her the creative outlet she needed to feed her artistic side. She works primarily with women with an emphasis on portraiture and you can see some of her beautiful imagery at or contact her today at 813-319-4203 for your next portrait!

WE closed out the show with Judy DiVincenzo-Alonzo, Founder of Still Sassy Sister, a clothing line designed to help the “real women” feel comfortable with her body while working out.  A lifelong passion for fitness and a healthy lifestyle started in her early 20’s but really kicked in once her two children came into the world. Fueled by a passion for creating and modeling a healthy lifestyle for her children, she became an avid reader of health related publications. She was making her own natural baby food long before it was in vogue to do so, and also remaking recipes for her family to cut down on the fats, sugars and “chemicals” pervasive in processed foods.  Personal fitness pursuits ran the gamut from running, swimming, weight training, and every new aerobic type class along the way. She was also concurrently a fashion mag “junkie,” always intrigued by its artistic relationship with the human form. These two interests would become the building blocks for years later.  Ten years ago she took her first Yoga class and was hooked, with the inspiration that yoga was as close to the fountain of youth as was possible with the flexibility, posture, strength, and concentration it promoted. Judy maintains that many of the signs of aging are thwarted by a commitment to an active and fit lifestyle.

After approximately 15 years of co-owning a company in the finance industry she became inspired to begin a second career incorporating her passions for health, fitness, fashion and beauty. Hating the fact that women judge themselves by “size and shape” instead of “healthy,” was created with the intention of making all women feel confident and enjoy their workout even more. Small but critical tweaks in design, have let us create a great new fitness apparel line that is designed with the concerns of women in mind. You no longer have to look like a fitness model to look amazing and feel great while you are in class or the gym!  Learn more at!

Marcy has also recently worked in various facets of advertising and film, moving from the New York City area.  They were in studio today to discuss their podcast, The Positive Energy Podcast, available on SoundCloud and also on YouTube here Both Kelly and Marcy are members of Tampa Bay Business Owners and discovered the synergy that existed between them on their prior #ThatBusinessShow appearance.  Since then, they have been working together in business and now in podcasting.  The Positive Energy Podcast focuses on balancing your work, family and well-being regarding energy, creative, metaphysical and the paranormal.  The discussion today was lively and ventured down many paths including a discussion on extra dimensions as well as a talk on the collective subconscious, an energy field that many believes connects all living things in a way that we cannot fully understand.  Kelly is an avid follower of science topics as is Jamie and the two exchanged a great discussion on this which bewildered Josh, our streaming producer.  It’s not every day on That Business Show where we get to mention topics like Dark Energy, Dark Matter and String Theory, all of which areas Jamie loves to explore outside of business.  Marcy adds the paranormal element to the discussion.  Marcy is clairvoyant and highly sensitive to the spirit world, something Jamie is not.  Marcy shares with us some of her paranormal experiences and Jamie jokes about the shadow people that supposedly live in his house, per a prior girlfriend that also is spiritually sensitive.  Jamie continues to search for that first paranormal experience and believes that while many experience these encounters, others such as himself are just not in tune with that “dimension”.  This is a very fun hour and informative on a scientific and paranormal level which deviates from the traditional show model.  Be sure to help support the growth of their podcast and learn more about them at their business sites and!

8am featured our next installment of #TechThursday with Nick Paras, President and CEO of Alpha Computing Solutions.  The topic of discussion today was Office 365, the online, cloud based platform that is quickly replacing the traditional desktop versions of all of the popular Office products such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  For just $99/year, you can install Office 365 on 5 pcs and all updates are included so you are always up to date with your software without having to buy the new version.  The cloud also allows you to access documents and data anywhere and Jamie and Nick discuss this movement in tech where it seems all software providers are moving away from desktop versions of their software to cloud based virtual platforms that have a subscription fee.  Licensing is much simpler, more PCs can install the software at a much reduced cost over desktop installations, and you are always up to date!  Also when compared to buying servers for collaborative tools, it is much less expensive.  Nick brings over 25 years of IT experience to the table and is the IT solutions provider for #ThatBusinessShow as well.  Reach out to him for all your IT needs at or give him a call today at 813-839-7671 X 100!

At 7am, we spoke with Regular Contributor Kristi Campbell, Owner of HomeInstead Senior Care.  She has over 13 years of experience in this industry and has amassed a team of over 100 caregivers.  Today’s topic was how to handle “wandering” in seniors.  Six out of 10 living with Alzheimer’s or dementia illnesses will wander, according to the Alzheimer’s Association and any senior living with Alzheimer’s and dementia is at risk for wandering. This behavior can affect individuals in all stages of the disease for as long as that person is mobile.   Wandering can happen at any time – and is not just limited to seniors on foot. Wandering can occur by anyone – even in a car or wheelchair.  Wandering often leads many to think a person is going somewhere aimlessly, but, in fact, many seniors who “wander” are going somewhere with intent – “to work,” “home,”  “to the store,” etc.  A senior loved one wandering or getting lost can be one of worst scenarios for families caring with loved ones living with Alzheimer’s or dementia illnesses. A wandering event causes immediate panic and unfortunately happens all too often.  To prevent wandering, it is critical for families to understand what triggers these events and steps they can take to reduce or discourage loved ones from wandering.  Common triggers for wandering include, delusions or hallucinations and those living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias may misinterpret sights or sounds, causing them to feel fearful and wander to escape their environment.  Individuals with dementia can be easily upset in noisy or crowded environments, triggering them to look for an escape from the chaos and fatigue, especially during late afternoons and evenings, individuals may become tired, causing restless pacing, and eventually, wandering.  To help families take proactive precautions against wandering, Home Instead has launched a free tool, the Missing Senior Network, available at WWW.MISSINGSENIORNETWORK.COM. This mobile-ready platform enables family caregivers to alert a network of friends, family and businesses, via text or email, to be on the lookout for a missing senior. This resource is part of Home Instead’s free Prevent Wandering program, available at that site which includes helpful tips and resources, including what triggers wandering events and how to keep loved ones safe.  In addition to setting up an alert network with the Missing Senior Network, other proactive steps families can take to help manage wandering behaviors in addition include, ensuring an individual who may be at risk is always wearing a form of identification, such as an ID bracelet and preparing the home for wandering. Families can do this by considering products that can keep seniors living with dementia safe at home, such as higher security locks or alarms for doors. In addition, families should keep walkways well-lit and create a safe space for seniors to wander by closing off certain parts of a room and locking door.  If you have a loved one in need of care, reach out to Kristi and her staff at or via phone at 813-684-1972!

The 7:30 segment was information on HUD homes.  Jamie is a HUD listing agent and broke down some of the incentives of buying HUD homes including the $100 down program available on all HUD owned homes that are FHA insurable as well as the Good Neighbor Next Door program where teachers, firefighters and emergency responders can buy a HUD home for 50% off of the appraised value.  To learn more about these programs and the available inventory, visit

At 8am, Jamie spoke with Jessica Rivelli, CEO and Founder of the Working Women of Tampa Bay networking group.  Just one day away from the Working Women State Conference, Jessica was online to talk about the event and push for the sale of the last 5 tickets!  Available at, use promo code Meloni for 10% off of the tickets and take advantage of hearing the stories of 28 professional women at the event!

My next guest was Lauren Silva, Financial Advisor and Owner of Silva and Associates, an Amerprise franchise.  Lauren is an expert in all things related to retirement planning and has personally helped Jamie in his attempt to someday retire although Jamie doesn’t think he’ll ever retire.  Located at 1103 W Cleveland St in Tampa, Lauren and her team regularly put on events aimed at retirement education including an upcoming event on the 29th at the Edison.  To register for this and inquire about all of her events, give them a call at 813-870-0892.  The discussion today was focused on paths for retirement for high dollar earners as they cannot use some of the conventional retirement vessels that others can use.  Life insurance is an excellent retirement solution and Lauren touches on that during this segment as well.  Through life insurance, you can amass a cash reserve without the tax penalties of other alternatives.  Learn more and schedule a consultation today with Lauren by visiting!

“Walking” With The Walk Law Firm – #ThatBusinessShow – #TBBOTuesday – Featuring Dr. Ron Eccles, Rochelle Walk, and Jim McPeak

Welcome back to the start of another productive and entertaining week of #ThatBusinessShow.  After a long, wet weekend, we hope everyone enjoyed their time off and is ready to get back to the daily grind.  The show is on daily and is live in studio, available from 7am to 9am and online via the video stream at  We work to bring you positive programming each morning; an alternative to news, sports and political talk.  We announced the Tampa Bay Business Owner’s Business Symposium last week and tickets and sponsor opportunities are now on sale.  Visit to pick up tickets and learn more.  The event will be one you do not want to miss.  With over 400 expected to attend, we will be celebrating World Chocolate Day with Award Winning Chocolatier William Dean Chocolates and the event will be highlighted by our Shark Tank Panel of Experts – come out and hear real stories of participants on the show and how they fared, including one who got a deal!!

Opening up the program today was Dr. Ron Eccles, Speaker, Coach and Business Trainer with Make Your Mark.  Dr. Ron is an accomplished entrepreneur having worked in many industries including Chiropractic, Real Estate Investments and Sales and was in studio today to talk about the 4 Rules of Business Success.  Rule one is figure out what you want.  While it seems simple enough, many people do not know or understand their own wants and needs.  Dr. Ron uses the analogy of trying to hit a target that you cannot see.  You must be laser focused on your wants so that you can develop a plan to hit your target.  Next, you must be willing to pay the price necessary to get it.  This is not necessarily a financial investment but rather a commitment to the time and resources you must commit to obtain your goal.  For many, this involves a sacrifice of comfort, entering a world of discomfort to get to the level they desire.  Dr. Ron shares with us a great quote that demonstrates this point too comparing those that are merely interested versus those that are committed – tune in to hear the line.  #3, The price of success must be paid up front and in full.  There are no lay away plans with success.  You must be willing to sacrifice who you are for who you are wanting to become.  The 4th rule is simple in writing but hard to practice and that is you must develop unwavering FAITH.  Whether it’s a belief in a higher power or an unrelenting belief in your own abilities, you must BELIEVE!  Dr. Ron is an amazing speaker and trainer and is holding an upcoming Business Seminar on October 6th at the Tampa Hilton Airport Hotel.  This is free and is not going to be a high pressure sales event.  Entrepreneurs from all levels will get some great takeaways from attending and you can register for this at – be sure to attend and commit to your business!

At 8am, we kicked off TBBO Tuesday with one of TBBO’s most loyal Sponsors and Members, Rochelle Walk of the Walk Law Firm.  Rochelle is also the Presenting Sponsor for the upcoming Business Symposium and is a specialist in all areas of business law.  As an attorney, she has represented clients in a wide range of legal transactions and disputes including complex commercial, insurance coverage, real estate, construction, financial restructuring and employment matters. She has served as an ombudsman in employment, elder care, NAACP, creditor and shareholder matters and has worked with a number of different international unions to resolve concerns. Most recently she has been engaged to help business partners and owners resolve disputes and differences so that their businesses can operate more effectively. Her work includes mediating and negotiating buy-sell agreements, partner or member buy-outs and new partner or member admissions for LLCs, partnerships and corporations.  Rochelle is also a Martindale-Hubbell Preeminent (AV)-rated lawyer and has been consistently named as one of the Top Lawyers in Tampa Bay since moving to Florida in 2007 and is included in Martindale-Hubbell’s inaugural and all subsequent editions of its Bar Register of Preeminent Women Lawyers (2011-present).  She joined the #MorningDiscussion today to discuss some of the basics of a business sale.  What contract do you use?  Should a business broker be involved?  Does the Tax ID stay with the business or does the new owner acquire?  What areas should be addressed in a contract?  Rochelle and Jamie touched on many of these areas, albeit briefly, but raised some good talking points.  If you are in the business to sale or buy, reach out to the Walk Law Firm.  You can learn more at!

Our 8:30 segment saw the return of past guest Jim McPeak, Owner of the McPeak Real Estate Firm.  Jim is also an REO agent specialist like Jamie and his firm specializes in REO as well as property management but can help you with all of your Real Estate needs from residential buying and selling to commercial Real Estate.  Jim is a military veteran of the US Air Force and is a tremendous supporter of our military veterans.  He often promotes the VA loan as an excellent way for veterans to get into their first home and tells a story of an 80 year old veteran who just learned he had the benefit and is now buying a home with it!  Jim also opened up a Real Estate School so if you or someone you know is looking to get into Real Estate, reach out to him today.  Learn more at or give him a call at 813-495-3875.
