#ThatBusinessShow gets an early start each day airing from 7am to 9am on Tampa Bay’s #1250WHNZ and the thought of beer at that time is not typically on our mind except on days when we are interviewing entrepreneurs making their living in this industry. Our guest in this segment was Leigh Harting, Owner of 3 Daughters Brewing. This craft brewery, located at 222 22nd St South in St. Petersburg, Florida, started with Mike and Head Brewer (then Head Chef) Ty Weaver in a local restaurant in St Petersburg, Florida. They were working on a recipe for a beer battered fish and decided to make it with their own hand crafted brews. No surprise, it sold a lot of fish and fueled their passion for brewing craft beer.
As the popularity of the beers grew, Mike and Ty decided to invest in a brew house to increase their brewing capacity for the restaurant. When they picked out a 30-barrel system, it was time to move on from the restaurant industry and start a journey in craft beer. As the brewery was being built, the common joke was, “how many beers do we have to sell to put 3 Daughters through college?”, hence the name 3 Daughters Brewing.
Leigh shares with the audience many of the flavors and trends in the industry and we talk about why craft brewing is a growing trend in the area. Their brands are found in many big box retailers including Publix and many may be familiar with the popular Beach Blonde Ale. “The challenge with making good beer is keeping the flavor consistent”. We learn that while they will make a great batch of beer, doing it over and over again is a challenge for them in their business. Even though beer is just 4 ingredients, there is a lot of Chemistry involved in keeping the flavor the same.
Located near the Tropicana stadium, this brewery offers a tasting room, tours and makes a great event space. They have food trucks on site and have trivia nights too! Live music is featured every Friday and Saturday night as well. Find them online at www.3dbrewing.com for more information or call to schedule your next team building event at 727-495-6002. The year was 1996, I was 19 and attending Florida Southern College where I majored in Chemistry and Biology in the hopes of becoming a Virologist. That obviously never happened because I spent more time at Kau’s, the college bar, than the classroom. I was the guy that showed up in class on test day which worked okay for the first two years but by the time I was a junior, that no longer worked and I had to drop out because I was failing all my classes. Needless to say my path to success took a detour at this point. I rebounded around age 27 and got back to school and onto a path of entrepreneurship.
Our guest in this segment was already an entrepreneur at age 19 and today is well on her path to success. She is Mary Osada, a Hair Stylist and Owner of Hair by Mary Osada. She is a graduate of the Paul Mitchell School in Tampa where she graduated with Honors and is also a Color Educator for Loreal Professional. Located at 533 S Howard Ave in Tampa, she opened her business with the goal to retire by age 50.
She attributes much of her clientele growth to Instagram and today keeps a full schedule which works with both men and women. She talks about the trends in the industry today and touches on her many services which include Balayage (I just learned about this today and cannot explain it) as well as full color and color re-touches. She also does Ombre Hair too, another trend that I just learned about today but if you Google that term you get a lot of pretty hair pictures! I’ve never been up on hair trends and have been sporting the same haircut since birth although I did try parting it to the other side once. Oh and I did highlights back in my early 20s. We also learn that Kelly tried her hand at hair styling too but had to retire early after an unfortunate incident that cost someone part of their ear.
You can schedule an appointment with Mary here https://www.styleseat.com/m/book/v/maryosada and please head over to her Facebook page https://www.styleseat.com/m/book/v/maryosada and support it with a like! Our guest in this segment was Gina Morales who owns her own Public Relations company, Gina Morales PR. After building the PR department at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, Gina branched out and started her own firm which now represents Film Tampa Bay among others. She spoke today about the relationship that Tampa Bay and Florida in general has with movie producers and how it is a challenge for our State to draw in big budget films. Recently, The Infiltrator, was produced in Tampa and she along with Dale Gordon played a central role in promotion for the film but stressed that more effort is needed to attract this industry here. The lack of resources and incentives are a large reason many producers do not come to Florida and the area recently lost a Ben Affleck film that is setup largely in Ybor City. The film was made in Georgia where it made more sense for the producers to re-build an Ybor City set than to film in the actual community.
Gina talks about the differences between PR and marketing and how PR is the art and science of earned media and building relationships and cannot necessarily be bought. This is the trust that is earned over time whereas marketing is everything else and is mostly bought by small business owners. Both require much data and research to be effective and Gina believes that the best PR people and marketers are using is an integrated approach to both. “All PR is not good PR” Gina explains too in this segment and speaks specifically about recent events in the media such as the Colin Kaepernick controversy and how many big brands do not want to be associated with negative issues involving their representatives. While some benefit from the idea that all PR is good PR, it is not universal and business owners need to subscribe to the idea that effective PR is good PR.
Gina speaks of her philanthropic and community involvement and stresses the importance of giving back to your community and closes with recommendations on getting publicity for your company ahead of big events. If you can use her services, get in touch with her at 813-530-6521 or online at www.ginamoralespr.com and catch the complete interview here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZIhv8oX2eo – all shows are streamed live in studio and you can watch live Monday through Friday 7am to 9am at http://www.tampabayradio.com!
